I just noticed this start today when I started my 96 855 up, and starting driving forward. The car makes a bad rattling sound when you are just starting off going forward, and the sound goes down a bit once the engine warms up. I was looking inside the engine aby while revving the engine a bit with it in gear and the parking brake yanked up.. and the sound eminates from the serp belt tensioner area, right by the tbelt. Which thing would this be?

when my 850 had a similiar sound, it was the Belt Tensioner. once it was replaced the sound went away. good luck

I would check the engine mounts also.
