Jiffy Lube v. Volvo 850 1993

Does it really matter where I get the oil changed? My Indy mechanic advised, when I asked him, that they "prefer" I get the oil changed with them because they "keep records". I think the cost less at a quick-oil change place. Does it really make a difference? We're not talking a King's ransom here, but . . .

Thanks!

I take my 96 850 to "Express Way" I think they do a good job for the most part. I've never had any complaints with their work and they don't spill shit all over your engine compartment (that happened to me @ jiffy lube). They also go over your car including lubing all hinges e/t/c.

    Jiffy Lube v. Indy shop? 850 1993

You say "Volvo" (usually meaning a Volvo dealer) but you say "Indy mechanic" which even Jiffy lube techs fit into that category as they're not really Volvo techs currently either even if they once were at some point in time.

ALL places of business keep records so that's not an issue nor are oil change records very important UNLESS you need to prove that you changed you oil for warranty purposes, like those who don't, the engine siezes and you need to prove something vs being denied a claim (yes....happens).

Most dealers have oil change coupon specials and hopefully someone who knows your car will be checking it over AND topping off fluids with no extra charge.

IF I was going to go to Jiffy lube, I'd take my own oil, filter and drain plug seal (DON'T let them install one of THEIR POS rubber drain plug seals that leak) and then after they are done, I'd check the fluid levels in their lot before I leave AND I'd make sure that the drain plug is tight. OK, then why even go there if you need to do all that? Do you save money? Sure, I know that usually many dealers aren't able to do a quick oil change so that can be an issue.

I am not going to go to Jiffy Lube--I'll suck up the $65.00 for the Indy (not dealer--sorry for the contradiction), as they are more reliable all the way around.

Thanks for the input--you made my mind up for me.

I work at a dealer and here a LOF costs $39.95 with a Volvo filter.

Sorry--what is LOF (lube, oil, filter?)? Are you saying I am getting ripped off? I am driving up to Seattle from San Francisco and have 1000 miles left before my next SCHEDULED oil change but thought I would have it changed before the drive. I could add a quart and drive up to Seattle and have it changed there, for cheaper I am sure--I am having timing belt done when I am up there to save a few as SF is a pretty expensive place.

Yes, LOF=Lube-Oil-Filter (old abreviation). Don't know how high labor rates are in SF but it's about $90 per hr in our area and an LOF (ONLY...NOT a "service") pays .3 hr (about 15 minutes) to the tech. The parts department gets a good buck for their Volvo filters. The normal posted price for an LOF only is $39.95 BUT they often send out coupons as most dealers do so our customers then can get the oil and filter changed for less too.
Guess I'd ad a qt now if low and wait if you can beat $65 for that elsewhere.

Jiffy Lube bent the lock back on the transmission dipstick on two of our Volvos.
I guess it was to be able to check the fluid in a jiffy.

(One that my daughter brought in once, and one before we bought it)

The manager conceeded that one of his people may have done the deed, but he never apologized!

Well, if you want to save a few $$, I would at least watch Jiffy Lube do the work. 850 1993

Think of an oil change as an opportunity for another set of eyes and ears to locate emerging problems. I don't think the local HS dropout at Jiffylube will have the experience to do much else than loosen a drainplug and replace a filter.

    You must be joking? Right?

In all fairness to Jiffy Lube, for most cars, they do an adequate job, they keep records of a sort--meaning they put a mileage sticker on the windshield to remind you of your next oil change, and they are quick and fairly priced for convenience. I would take my gremlin there all of the time.

I would never take the Volvo there. Period, unless you're selling it tomorrow.

The reason, we are talking about lesser experienced techs working on the car for one. Two, from experience with my wife's Corsica, the filter they replace yours with is about half the size, meaning an oil change at 1500 miles instead of 3000. They won't tell you this either. You have to ask to see what they're installing and know ahead of time the size that normally fits your vehicle. My wife had an experience at one of those shops where they forgot to put back on the oil cap. The result was that the engine shot oil all over the engine compartment.

I take it to Jiffy or equiliant but I supply them with the oil filter.
I prefer not to take it to the dealer. Over priced and inconvient. Plus I get the synthethic. Sometimes I'll do it myself but then you get stuck with the old oil.

How is it that they allow you to give them a filter? I would think that they wouldn't back up their work if the customer supplies materials?

I let them install one of their filters ONCE and the car sounded awful when I started it. Their filter allows all the oil to run back to pan and you get an unlubricated start. They have no qualms about you giving them a volvo filter to put in.. they still charge the same rate.

Im saying that I would use them if I didnt want to get dirty. Lets face it, it doenst take a brain surgen to change oil,(so a HS dropout would do) even in a Volvo!!

Just use genuine Volvo filters, and a new plug and oring on the oil cap, and they shouldnt have a problem. They may even get the filters in for you from the dealer, if you asked them!!
