97 850glt NO sway bar 850 1997

I guess its questionable if the 97 volvo wagon is supposed to have a sway bar. my volvo dealer just said some have them, some don't. i read that the 97 wagon advertized front and rear sway bars. Does anyone have a copy of the pamphlet that could be sent to me. I have contacted volvo of north american asking them to install one (even though its out of warranty) but I am anticipating a fight.

I just found out my rear sway bar is missing...

thank you

My wagon didn't come with rear sway bar nor Novimats shock.

many wagons don't have rear sway bars....and instead use novimats instead... sizes available for the rear are 19.5mm, 20mm, and 20.8mm

fyi, mind didn't either.

so my car should have a novimat if it doesn't have a sway bar? what I am wondering is if they advertised a front/rear sway bar. Does a novimat work in the same manner as a sway bar? Why does everyone seem to think a sway bar is the answer for body roll if it has a Novimat?

As you can see Im not very technical about cars, but appreciate your help and looking forward to the response.

Novimats shocks are the self level shock while the rear sway bar will reduce the body roll when doing the high speed/faster cornering. As I mentioned in my previous post, my 95 N/A wagon didn't come with rear sway bar nor Novimats shocks. In general, only turbo version comes with both front and rear sway bars. One can buy the rear sway bar from IPD and add it by themselves to reduce the body roll during high speed cornering.

My car is a turbo model 850 1997, without a sway bar. I still wonder why?

In 1997 model, GLT meant the light pressure turbo (push the output to 190HP instead of the N/A engine, 168HP) not the original full blown turbo(22x HP). I am not sure whether rear sway bar was standard in light pressure turbo. Did you purchase the car from Volvo dealer as used or new? If it is then you can talk to the dealer about this issue, and ask them to install the rear sway bar for you at no cost. Otherwise, I may want to consider to add this bar yourself.

Do you like to drive fast or fast cornering ? If you are then a rear sway definitely help to stablise the car.

the dealer doesn't think it was supposed to have a sway bar if it didn't come with one. I will have one installed, but I would rather they pay for it instead of me. my next option is to ask them to install one that I have purchased for no charge. since they do all of my work I am pretty sure they will do that.

thank you for your response.

rear sway bars were an option for the sport suspension on the wagon. wagons without generally don't have a sway bar in the rear.

i agree on the getting the rear sway bars from ipd....i have not found anyone else who makes them. they have lifetime warranty...volvo's doesn't. and volvo's is smaller anyway.

one thing. the rear delta link suspension by design puts the sway bar in a very stressful area.. ipd's gone thru 3 design changes and are on their 4th (missed the first 25 mm design, so waited for the 2nd...broke at the weld, and now have the 3rd design free...still seems to work fine, but ipd now sells a 4th). so their lifetime warranty comes in very handy.

interestingly enough 1997's were sold with front and rear although some earlier models manufactured in earlier 1996 didn't have the rear sway bar. so none of the wagons prior to 1997 had a rear sway bar.

yeah...i thought it was odd u didn't have it... most 850 (sedans, wagons, and r) in 97 had 20 mm front, 19.5 mm rear...at least that's what i've been able to gather...
