My service light JUST came on a minute ago... it runs like a champ ever since I got it... should I reset it (and how would I go about doing that?) or should I take it too a dealer.

On the '96 850 you need to reset the service light thru the OBDII port. IPD sells a tool for this or you can get the laptop software package from www.OBD-2.com that has everything in it for your laptop. Many service centers also have the means to reset the service light, not just the dealer. Good luck ....... Mike

If you're driving an 850, I would recommend taking it to the dealer. The light is on only because you are due for normal maintenance.

SO that light only came on because it went certian miles/time and it was activated? It coming on doesn't indicate something wrong with the engine?

Is there a "check engine" light on the 96 850 or is everything indicated through the "service" light?

The service light is just a reminder for regular maintenance, (oil change etc). The check engine light on the other hand if it comes on means the
ECU has dectected a malfunction on the system. usually it is emission related.and yes the 850 has both service and check engines lights.

any idea what type of fee a dealer would charge to reset this?

depending on the year of your car you can reset it yourself as per instruction from bay 13 at volvospeed.. if its pre 96 you can do it yourself without any tools.. 96 and 97 you would need an a tool or take it to the dealer.

I have a question myself.. my cars a 95 and i reset it when the light comes on but what if you do your oil change when the light isnt on. I tried to reset it but I never got the flashing lights and have no idea if it did or not.
I want to go by the service indicator than to keep a mental note or to write it down. Can it be done mid cycle or does it only work after the service light has come on?

reseting it does just that resets it, so it comes on every 5k miles and not every
multiple of 5k (e.g 80k, 85k, etc)
Also I hope you are changing your oil more frequently than every 5k.....

My light comes on every 12000 km. I do it before that so somewhere in between oil changes the light service light comes on. I reset it at that point.
