Volvo Touch Up Paint Help S80

Greetings,

My 2000 S80 Volvo just got a rock chip in the hood that's half the size of
a pencil's eraser. Thanksfully no dent. It's a half moon shape and
right in the very middle of the chip you can see the steel thru the
primer. The tiny little bit with the steel showing is very very small
but I'm wondering if I need to put a half a drop of primer on it first
before using the Volvo Touch Up Paint and Clear Coat. I showed the
chip to my local Volvo Dealer and he wasn't sure. Spoke to a body
shop and they didn't think so saying the Volvo Touch Up Paint (Pen)
should take care of it. Anyone touched up their Volvo with the Volvo
Touch Up kit before and wish to share any thoughts on the process? Any suggestions on how to actually do the touch up as the instructions that came with the kit are non existent.

Many Thanks!

Jethro

Volvo Touch Up Paint Help - Volvo kit S80

Volvo sells a kit that contains "base paint" and "clear varnish" touch-up pencils.

The base paint tube has a small wire brush built into the cap.

The kit that I have says "CODE 412" and the number"9434545"

I have never used it, but the bottle color is quite dark.

Thanks James and others who replied! I did purchase the Volvo kit that you describe James. I'm not clear on why there is a metal tip brush (wouldn't that scratch the paint) plus a soft tip brush included with the Volvo touch up paint. No mention is made of these two brushes on the packaging. Any ideas?

Yes, I think that the wire brush is used to clean up the chip before you prime or paint it. It is the smallest wire brush I have ever seen.

While your chip may be new, many people do notice or try to repair a chip until some time has passed and the metal rusts or some wax or other gunk gets in the chip.

I would primer the bare metal just to be safe. If you have spray primer just spray it into the lid and then put it on with a brush or q-tip or toothpick. If the touchup brush is too large, as it sometimes is, you can use instead an artist brush. They are available in all sizes, cheap at Wal-Mart, etc. One of the keys to getting the paint on is the viscosity. You can thin it to make it flow better, got to use the right thinner though, laquer or enamel, based on the paint. On a flat surface you can really thin it and it will flow to fill up the indentation. More coats if neceessary. Sounds like you're on a vertical surface which is a little tougher. Lay it on at the top and let it flow down, working it around a little with the brush. The paint will shrink so you may want to put on more than one coat - maybe two weeks apart. Some people overfill slightly then sand with a tiny sanding block and 2000 sandpaper. Again you've got to let it dry for weeks because it's going to shrink for quite a while. This all has too much waiting time for a detailer. They will usually fill the depression and then wipe it level with acetone.

Jethro;

If you search on the internet you can find the way to do it (I came across it once) that looks good. Just putting a drop of touch-up paint on is good enough but not the way a detailer would do it.
