'99 S70, 61K miles. Notiecd yesterday a tapping noise, does not sound like metal-on-metal, but not sure. Apparently RPM-related in frequency, from the engine compartment. Noticeable only when I am in front of the car (Not loud). No idea how long it's been there--usually don't have engine running when I'm out of the car. Sudden temp drop yesterday, from 40-50 degrees to about 12 degrees. This am , checked it and it is not audible when the engine is cold, but becomes more so when the engine is warmed up. (Also have the usual cold-weather moaning when I turn at low speeds).
Serp belt on order; car has the 105K mile timing belt. Any ideas?

Checked again at noon; same syndrome--not audible until engine warms up. Low-pitched percussive noise. Will try to check codes this pm,if the chance presents itself.
Not a good week for vehicles in this household; just put the spousemobile ('92 960) in for an engine transplant; apparently not a systemic Volvo problem; the mech is pretty sure that the P.O. overheated the engine, then traded it off and we got stuck.

Sounds like a stuck lifter...but I would think you would hear that all the time instead of just hot. What weight oil are you running? I would run some Mobil1 synthetic 5w30 or 10w30 as this oil has very high detergent and would clean any sludge that may have developed causing the lifter to stick.

Finally got time to mess with it further; code 0455 and 1171; noise has quit since I installed a new canister purge valve. Musta been a noisy little bugger!

Mobil 1 10w30 since new, regular changes at 3000-3500 miles.
