high pitched whistle at certain rpms...only occurs when cold 850

I get this high pitched whistle when the car is cold during acceleration through the 2500+ region of the rpm range.

This has become pretty noticeable since my mechanic fixed a blown intake manifold gasket. Can I pin this on him for a free fix or what?

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

It should not be a problem. I would search here for similar tips. My car does it do, only til it warms up. I can't recall the exact reason, but its here on the board somewhere.

If it is the turbo, mine does it too till warm. My 745t really sings like a Freightliner till it's hot too.

Perhaps until the turbo's parts have heated and expanded to operating tolerances what we're hearing is "normal."

Unless of course it's a vacumn manifold leak as you're suspecting. The turbo's cold "whistling" shouldn't have been affected at all by replacing the manifold gasket. I'd take it back to him.

That's the thing...my car is not a turbo but it sounds like one. It can't be right.

Standing next to the engine can you pinpoint where the sound is coming from? With a length of tubing you might find the leak. Hold one end up to your ear and carefully move the other end around as much of the manifold as you can reach. You should hear it clearly in your ear.

Could be nothing more than a vacumn line left off or something simple as that. I'd still run it by the shop that did the work and have them look at it.

This is just a shot in the dark... I have a 93 854GLT w/165K. I love the car to death. Anyway, my car has been making the same sound as you're describing for the past four years or so. I have never really thought to do anything about it because it will eventually go away. This past fall I had some engine "issues" and changed out the idle control motor and fuel pressure regulator only to discover that my intake manifold had slipped out of place and this had caused the deamons in my engine. I replaced the gasket and thought that it could have had something to do with the horrible whistle sound in the cold. Nope...still does it. I spoke with a local volvo "guru" and he informed me that it most likely my serpentine belt tensioner pully. I guess the bearings get crappy after some time. He suggested spraying some type of a lubricant down onto it to get by for now. It did quiet the whistle for a day or so. I'd go ahead and check that out and see if that might be the problem.

            Good Luck,
            Nate Brown
