Yeah what they said is true, your fan motor crapped out, BOSCH can't seem to manufacture a fan motor that lasts more than a few years. I have an 18 year old Ford F150 with the original blower motor. I took mine out and did a little engineering investigation on it, I separated the ends of the motor and removed the stator. Mine was squeeling like a dying pig. I cleaned it all with compressed air, lubed the sleeve bearings, and restaked the end caps and it worked, but I wound up installing one off ebay (used). Not sure if my "fix" worked. I did notice the windings that contact the brushes was worn real uneven, lots of grooves. If you are going to do the labor yourself, my recommendation would be to install a new motor, try ebay. It's a lot of fun removing that knee bolster, reinstalling it is better. Don't be an idiot like me when removing the glovebox, the door it easily removed from the side plastic pieces (they hold the door in the horizontal position) by jamming a small screw driver in the tiny slot where they enter the door.

The blinking REC and A/C LEDs means there is a fault code stored in the ECC memory and you need to retrieve that code to see what went wrong. The ECC is the brain box that controls the climate inside the cabin. Since you already heard the fan motor shreeking I guess it might be the fan motor seizure that set off the code. I'm not sure the standard code reader can read ECC stored codes but I believe the one from www.OBD-2.com can display them on your laptop. If nothing else you can take it to a good independent shop in your area and they can scan it and change out the fan for you. If your 850 doesn't have the pollen filter already retrofitted to it I would recommend that too. It will keep dust and debris out of the fan and evaporator in the future.
