Cassette Player S40-V40

Currently my S40 come with original Volvo Cassette Player + CD Changer, when I bought it from usedcar. The car has no Manual book. But I need to study the specification & setting for my player as well. The model is SC-802. Do I know this model has one system call Loudness or LD, those can increase or amplified the better quality sound system.

Normally, all the car player should have that system as usual. If the Volvo player has included this system, can you teach me how to activate or which button can ON the Loudness(LD).

I don't have the book on the SC-802, but the instructions and function diagrams on the Sc 710, Sc 811, and SC 815 do not show a Loudness button ( although I remember it as being there on many of the earlier series of head units). This function may have been taken over by the ASC (active sound control) function, which increases the volume of the radio depending on the speed of the vehicle, and is controlled by a lead to the speedometer. If you have that function, you should be able to activate or deactivate it by pressing on the "cd" button--"ASC" will show on the screen. To a certain extent, the "loudness" function is also performed by the "dolby" circuitry in the radio; there may not have been any need to have a separate "loudness" function on the newer radios because of the improved dolby set-ups. Sorry I can't help more.

hai, u mention about the S70, it just look like very interested. due to my knowledge on the player, Loudness system, the most of the player should have it & once we activate the system, we can saw the "LD" in the display mode...

This system can be activated anytime weither we use for CD, Cassette or Radio. I still have no idea about the ASC purpose, and look like very funny when u said the system to increase the volume by the car speeding control.

one more thing about the "dolby" only can activated once we use the cassette player due to the system can reduce unnecessary noisy but not to increase the quality sound. And this system may to auto reduce the treble/tweeter sound performance. Am I right !!

anyway, thanks to your information to me. now, i beleive the Volvo Player have no include the Loudness system... Than, I need to install amplifier to increase the sound quality performance..

'loudness' is a term normally used to describe a function which increases the treble (high frequency) and bass (low frequency) content of the sound. Effectivelt you can do this by turning the bass and treble controls up!

It has no connection with dolby...and there are many forms of dolby which is a method of recording and playing back music to imporve it audible quality (or the number of chanels).

I dont know of any volvo units with a loudness function specifically, but you can get the same effect by boosting th bass and treble controls...

In fact it was aonly really ever a marketing tool (along with rumble and scratch filters) invented in the 1970's to try and impress people with the number of knobs on an amplifier....if anythign it LOWERS the quality of the sound as it adds distortion and curcuitry....

If you look at proper hi-fi amplifiers most dont even have tone controls....

yeah, Loudness can make the better sound performance on the treble & bass. We know every player system has treble & bass mode, but this is not enough to increase the better performance without the Loudness. For eg. treble & bass can up to the maximum by 100% but if we can use the Loudness, it may can increase extra 30% those total maximum at 130% for treble & bass. This system we no need to install equalizer or amplifier if we want to play for internal sound.

My previous car has include the original player from Clarion brand those have better sound system than Volvo SC-802. It is without to use equalizer or amplifier. Once I activated the Loudness, all the bass & treble will automatic to increase the better sound system inside the car just like we using the amplifier....

            your thinking is flawed...

loudness does NOT increase the power the stereo can produce, indeed if anything it decreases it due to distortion in the loudness curcuits. The '%' of change to the frequency curve of the sound is largely dependant on how 'crude' the loudness curcuit is...

Most trble/bass controll will give at least 12bd of boost/cut - now thats 4 TIMES the volume....i have seen loudness curcuits that produce similar boost - but at a price...

basically what your in danger of doing is raising the output level of the pre-amps to the point of creating distrortion in the power amps...and that damages speakers....

...now back to how loudness works ALL it does is to boost the treble and bass...it DOES NOT increase the ability of the stereo to produce volume..indeed loudness was pioneered for listening at LOW volume (a condition where speakers tend to loose treble and bass ability ..particualary in single cone configurations)...

so back to the question if you want MORE volume and QUALITY then your going to have to upgrade your amp and speakers...if you want to change the tonal balance of your sound...use the tone controls...

If you want more bass content to the sound adding an amplifier will have ZERO effect..it may raise the volume but it will not, proportionally, produce more bass (or treble). The add on here is that of course if you control the amp through (crudely a bass pass curcuit) or better an active crossover and then match it to appropriate bass speakers ( i wont use the word sub-bass here as most speakers sold as such for cars are not really sub bass - and you wouldnt want to be in the vehicle if they were....) then you will produce more bass...

If its done via an active cross over and a second amp set driving appropriate high frequenct drivers (try compression horns for that real ZING) then you can boost the high frequency content too....but at this point you wil be wanting to add mid range amps and speakers as well...and you have just spent a lot of money!....

so if you want this sound cheaply...replace your head unit with an aftermarket one with XBAS or the other marketing ploys they are now calling the loudness curcuit (and they sound HORRIBLE if they are turned up!)

well, i don't care about the system will be better or not..
now, i will suggest to change the audio player system from my car.
yesterday, i go to check out the car accessories outlet with selling the branded Cassette + Single Disc + CD Changer those I tested the saound system better than previous without to install the external amplifier. The player has built-in amplifier with the small circuit & surround system. The size same as my one by 2-DIN.

One question need to ask. If I change the player system, would it affected the whole car to become malfunction or problem? Cause I hope not to spoilt anything on the IC-chip & wire harness.

you will need to get an adaptor harness from a GOOD specialist audio supplier i would imagine (or make one up your self)...also bear in mind that when you heard the units they were probably in a shop (which is a VERY different environment to a car), in a stand DESIGNED to maximise the bass in all likelyhood and NOT using the speakers you have in your car..therfore the likely hood of it sounding the same in the car is minimal!

Why not go visit your volvo dealer and sit in some s40-s and listen to the various sound system options...find one you like and buy it a fit to your car...

this will have a number of advantages...(1) everything will be stock (2) it should fit in easily (3) no need to mess with the wirring (4) it will look right (5) you get to listen to it in the right place BEFORE you buy it....

well, i do have try to ask volvo dealer to quote me the price on the car alarm system... there is crazy price for me those cost me more than USD300.00 just to activate the alarm by using the software.

So, I check the outlets only cost me USD200.00 with branded from COBRA/VIPER with more feature than volvo alarm.

so, i don't think dealer can quote me cheaper price to upgrade my audio system as well.. those i check the branded from Clarion/Kenwood/Sony at USD200.00 c/w speaker + cd-changer
