Are the Computer Software programs any good? S70 1998

I just saw a thread about some software you can download to your laptop "free" and it will read all your codes. Has anyone tried this, and is it reliable, or is it just a waist of time. I was told that Auto Zone readers just mess up your computer???????

I bought the cables & interface from scantool.net and it worked great.I used it to read & reset a code that turned out to be a bad thermostat. It only reads engine codes and some sensor data.I also downloaded a program from obd2crazy.com that was a little better. There are many other sites that have programs to read ALL the obdII codes but I haven't tried them yet.

Autozone won't mess them up. It's OBDII so the readers conform
to a standard. Clearing the codes can mess you up if you do that and
then try to get a smog since the "all is ok" codes won't go back
to OK until the car has been driven for some time (after clearing all
code). Your smpog check then fails. I bets that is where the
    "mess it up" rumor started.

It might have been that the mechanic wanted me to pay him $70 and not go to Auto Zone and have them do it free. Is that computer software any good?
