Door 'check straps' 850 1995

Hey all,

I opened my driver's door when I was getting out of my car the other day, heard a snap, and now there's no resistance when I open or close the door. I think something has happened with my check strap inside the door. The metal strap is connected just fine to its hinge on the body of the car, but seems to be loose and "floating" around in the slot inside the door.

I haven't taken apart the door yet, but I suspect that kind of repair is in order soon.

What usually fails, and what parts would I need to get ahold of to fix this potentially dangerous (at least to the hinges and paint on the car) situation.

Thanks again,

Nate

The door check strap problem is apparently common on 850s and rather expensive to repair if you let a dealer do it. There is a link in this string to the Ozbrick site where you will find a "bloody marvelous" fix for this problem. Very clear instructions--I did it for a cost of about 1 hour labor and $2.00 in parts--highly recommended....

Same noise on my '95 wagon driver door. On close inspection there is a crack in the sheet metal where the strap connects to the car. I got 2 estimates at reputable body shops, $250 and $300. One of the shops told me if I could put up with the noise and be careful not let the wind catch my door, I could leave it alone.

You may have the commmon door check rust problem. Rust develops where the strap attaches inside and eventually breaks free leaving the door loose and unconnected. The fix is usually welding and some painting. I do not think the repair is super expensive, but is not for the DIYer. It happened to mine years ago, was fixed and still works fine. Perhaps someone on this site can quote you a reasonable repair price.

It turns out that the welding didn't break on the door of my car. It's a southern car that only recently encountered the harshness of winter associated with Minnesota.

What failed was the door stop that's bolted inside the door. Ordering a replacement part this week.

I had a similar problem with my t5, the actual spring inside the door cracked in half and I had no resistance to hold the door open. The fix was simple I took off the door panel and removed the spring mecahnism. I got the part at a local volvo yard for twenty bucks and just screwed it right back in. It was really simple, took me about 1/2 hour to fix.
