flame trap, turbo's, filters???? 850 1996

Okay, the other day there was a discussion about turbo's and having to clean a filter to reduce "blow by" at the oil filler cap. Someone mentioned that it was behind the intake manifold. Where is this "filter" and how do you clean it.

Turbos don't have a flame trap like NA engines. The holder and hoses are there but the little flame trap element isn't. It is located on the back of the large air intake hose where it makes a 90 deg turn to go into the throttle body from the air cleaner

As Joffroa says, you must be referring to the oil trap. On the 2/700 series engines, the large hose from the flame trap holder goes to this oil trap on the side of the block and I'm assuming on the 850 as well. I'd have to check to make sure but it about has to go there. It's unlikely to plug up on well maintained engines. On the 740 at least, one way to clean this thing w/o removing the intake manifold is to disconnect the flame trap holder and insert a funnel in the hose. DUmp half a can of GUNK engine flush in the funnel. Only do this during an oil change with the drain plug out. The GUNK should run right thru and out the drain hole in the pan if the trap is open and it will dissolve the crud if it isn't..

Oil trap 850 1996

I've asked IPD and Volvo dealers and the same response I got was that there is no flame trap on a Turbo. Turbo's have something called an "oil trap" or oil separator. Its a black plastic box that's bolted to the engine block and its located right behind the intake manifold. I believe the hose right beside the oil filler goes to this oil trap. I bought the oil trap, o-ring and intake manifold gasket. The oil trap is not easy to get to. I thought I would be able to do it myself but since it requires the removal of the intake manifold and subsequently the fuel injectors/fuel rail as well then I am very leery of this as a DIY.
