Faulty Fault codes? 850

Hi all,

I've been having trouble lately with my 94 140K wagon. I just bought it around the 135K mark and it seems like it's falling apart all the sudden. So the first thing I do is go get a Haynes manual. I learn I can pull fault codes, pretty cool! So I do the fuel system (A2) and get two codes which don't appear in the Haynes manual. 5-5-4 and 5-4-5. Could anyone shine some light on what these codes mean and how I might go about fixing them?

Thanks.

Faulty Fault codes? 850 1994

Thanks for the site link. Should be helpful in the future.

However, I'm still wondering if this means I've got a damaged converter and I need to replace it or do I have a bad sensor somewhere or neither? Are damaged cat. converters a common problem with 850s?

Thanks.

I visited that site (and that page as a matter of fact) before I posted this question. However, the codes I got from my A2 socket weren't listed on there. I'm guessing/hoping someone on here might have that little Volvo data book and could tell me what the codes mean. Please?

According to the litle book:

5-4-5=
Misfire at least 1 cylinder, three way catalytic converter (TWC) damage

5-5-4 =
Misfire cylinder 4, three way catalytic converter (TWC) damage

Thanks Greg.

Damaged cat? So now what do I do?

I don't have the "rotten eggs" smell typically associated with cat. converter failure. Missfires... why would it be missfiring due to the cat? Is it clogged (or at least heavily congested) causing some back up in the combustion process?

What do guys do for cat replacements around here? The thing makes up a 90 degree or something if I recall. I can't just buy an inline aftermarket cat and weld it on. Oh boy....

What little book are you referring to?

My haynes manual doesn't list those codes. However, my chilton manual does but lists them for 1995 with Bosch Motronic 4.3 ignition system. And it only shows the EZ-129K for the 94. Does the 94 also have the Bosch 4.3?

Thanks.

It's called the Pocket Data Booklet. Search this site for that phrase.

You can probably get it at https://www.volvotechinfo.com/
