You can but a code reader and reset tool at Harbor Freight for $39.00. Works fine.

Are you sure that the code reader / reset tool sold by Harbor Freight Tools
will reset the Service Light on my 96 ?

Actually, I was incorrect. It will reset the Check Engine light. Sorry...

For the '96 and later cars you have to use an electronic tool. Available at IPD or FCPGroton.com for about $150. Plugs into your OBD-II socket and resets the computer. Or do a search on the web for "Volvo Service Reset Tool" and see where else you can find it. Here's one on Ebay for $75 that looks pretty good :
