Hello, my car lately has been getting atrocious fuel economy - about 10 miles per gallon. I got my OBDII reader, and it shows two codes: P0101- Mass Volume Air Flow Cuircut and Performance, P1171-Fuel Adaptation Bank 1.
Does anybody know what the problem might be? Or a way to further test it? My mechanic does not have Vadis tools and my Volvo dealer is expensive, not very good and untrustworthy.
Please help.

    reset the electrical connector to the MAF sensor. Pull the connector out of the socket 6 to 8 times, sometimes a poor connection from corrotion can set a code.

    Disconnect the battery for 10 min and see if code goes away.

    The codes only you give you a starting point by identifying the circuits that are giving "out of spec" readings. You really need a service manual with the diagnostic tree for the error codes. That said, I would give the mass air flow system a through cleaning with something like injector cleaner or brake cleaner. You want to remove any buildup of carbon. Check all of the air or vacuum hoses and make sure that they are connected and don't have any cracks.

      A cursory check of the air piping did not find any cracks.
      Does anybody know the procedure for cleaning the Mass Air Sensor? Aside from MAS problem could it be bad fuel filter or bad air filter? Anything else it that might be?
      Does it take a purchase of VADIS software? Or just giving the car to the dealer will do?

        My P1171 was my MAF sensor. Popped a new one in and have had no
        cel for almost a year.

        MAF's can be found mail order for about $162.

        Also my mileage was terrible before MAF swap and
        beautiful after MAF, about 20 MPG.

          WEll, I have cleaned up the air filter box and changed the airfilter. Run OBD 2 and p1171 is gone but generic p0101 remains along with abisman fuel efficiency. Alldata does not have anything to offer for p0101. So anybody have any ideas?
