From the readings I've seen here, it looks like a slam dunk, that when your ABS/TRACS light comes on you're almost certain to be replacing the ABS module under the hood. What do you think. Should I just go for it???? I don't have a code reader so I can't just go to the dealer and get him to read it.

A problem that seems to be on many older 850's is when the ignition switch starts going the ABS will get fault codes with power cutting in and out to it. I woudl check that before doing anythign with the ABS unit.

Thanks for the Tip. I recently did my ignition switch with a new one for a starting problem I had back in October. So I'm good in that department. It's nice to know this though so I can narrow my options.

Marty, about 95% of the reason for the ABS problems, is a defective ABS Control Unit.

Thanks Vitor. I will be looking you up soon, once I get the unit out of my car. Just have to wait for a break in the bad weather. I need at least 50 degrees so my fingers don't freeze off. We got hit with snow last night here in CT.

Search Ebay for "Volvo ABS". You'll find a listing for someone who repairs the units. I had mine done 6 months ago and so far no problems.

If it is the abs module the cost of a new one is $500 +. You may want to look up Vic Rocha. He repairs modules for one third the new price and provides a guarantee. He did my 1996 850 in November 2003. I have had no problems since then.

You can go to Auto Zone and they will let you use their code reader or do it for you for free. You can also buy a reader at Harbor Freight for $39. If it says the ABS module, you may want to have it resildered. There is someone that frequents this site that will do it. If it doen't work, then he only charges shipping. Just a thought. Most ABS issues are soldering issues.
