checking obd 850 1996

Hey List,
I'm sure this has popped up before. How do you check the OBD codes on a 96 850. I have a list of the codes, but I am uncertain on how to actually read the codes without a reader. If somebody could point me to some resources on how to read/diagnose the codes it would be great as I really need to get my check engine light off so I can get my wagon inspected.
Thanks
Joel

95 was the last year volvo put the "self diagnostic" unit under the hood as the EPA required all cars sold in the US market from 96 on to be "OBD II compliant". You need an OBD II code reader to pull the codes on your 96. The "plug in" is on the console under the little coin tray in front of the shift lever. Many guys swear by the 40 buck unit sold by Harbor Freight and others made by Equus, IPD etc. If you're into more advanced troubleshooting and have a PC, look at ALex Peper's software obd-II.com I think is his site or do a search on Google "alex peper"

I purchase the Harbor Freight model and can't get it to work with my 97 850 and I've had several responses concurring that it won't work. I'd try another model.

If it's a basic check engine light fault, Autozone can read it for free, if you have one near you.

IPD sells a code reader for about $170 that they say will read volvo codes. I don't think they would say that without testing it first. I have a standard OBD scan tool and it reads some but not all volvo codes. I can reset the check engine light no problem, but some codes are not readable.

It's worth buying a good reader since you can probably solve what's wrong and not replace extra parts, or at least make sure your repair shop does the right repair.

And Harbor Freight sells an inexpensive one for $40.
