new tires - suggestions 850 1996

Hello,

It looks like it 's new tire time for my 855 T-5 (92k miles). More than anything I am looking for a quieter ride than I presently have. Suggestions?

A related question: two tires need replacement and the other two...well, not yet, but maybe in 10,000 miles. Should I buy all four? And -- if I buy only two now, can I buy 205-50-16's given the fact that the other two tires are 205-55's?

Thanks!

I checked out TireRak reports and suggestions from this forum and went with Bridgestone Turanzas (205-55-16) on my '95 850T sedan. Quiet, great in rain, great cornering, exceptional treadwear and a 40K warranty on this V-rated tire. Costco will special order them if one is located in your area.

lots of choices.. 850 1996

I purchased the Dunlop SP Sport A2's which are H rated, last year. Very good tire so far, and another economical choice among the many good choices offered here so far.

Keep maximum load in mind. Road & Track mentioned that many performance tires do not have a load rating for large wagons like out bricks.

My summer only Pilots are almost gone in the front and have a quarter inch in the rear. I am going to swap them this week and hope the then rear tires last for a couple of months. Yokohama? I like the quiet part, what about the wear. Of course, at half of the Pilot cost, if they last three years I will be happy.
As for mixing brands, types, I wouldn't. The handling in the wet will be compromised.

I recently put a set (4) of the Yokohama Avid Touring on my '94 850 sedan and the are wonderful..I would have put the Michelin X-one's on but they are no longer making them just like they no longer make the XH4 series. It seems once the put out a product that lasts along time and gives great service they discontinue it.

Good luck.....

About 1,000 miles ago, I replaced a set of Michelin Pilots with Falken 512s--they were top rated in Consumer Reports at a considerably lower price point than the other top rated tires. So far, absolutely delighted, excellent ride, quiet. It is generally not a good idea to mix tires--all four of the same type, age will give you best handling and generally safer.

Anyway, I think Falkens should be on your list to investigate...

Most respectable tire installation places won't mix tire sizes on your car. Not a good idea. I'm riding on 4 BF Goodrich Touring T/A's which i got at Sam's for $92 each. I did some research on tirerack.com and read some reviews and I've been very happy with the ride, and the wear. There's a lot of tires out there. I'm using the 205/55 16's and not having the rubbing problem that some elude to. Maybe I'm just not taking any sharp corners. Anyway, good luck.

Dan,
I am also in Binghamton with a '96 855 Turbo. I believe I have replied to another posting that you had before. I put on Continental Extreme Contacts-205/55-16's(V-rated) last year and have been extremely satisfied with them. Quiet, great handling, nice ride and still waiting to see about longevity. They are an all-season rating, but I still switch to my Blizzaks for the upstate winters. Got them from TireRack for a decent price and mounted/balanced at Super Tire on Court Street for $13.00 each. Good Luck!!!
