2000 V70 acceleration hesitation V70-XC70 2000

If the transmission fluid needs changing, it hasn't ever been done, can that cause a problem in cold weather only, and let it operate normally in warm weather?

My husband's 2000 V70, purchased in August 2003, developed a hesitation as the weather got colder last Fall. It's like the transmission isn't going to shift, and then it finally does with an abnormal force. Once you get up to speed it drives fine. The problem shows up when you accelerate from stops signs, stop lights, etc. On warm days it is hardly noticeable. Have talked to Volvo service (dealer is 2 hours from us) and they said it may need transmission fluid change, car had 40,000 miles on it when we bought it, has 52,000 on it now. It is covered under the extended warranty so I hate to have fluid changed if that isn't the problem. I thought I had read on here at some point that there was something about an update for the computer of this car, but can't find that info again. (Dealer service says they haven't heard of that) Thanks.

52,000 miles sounds early to change the ATF, but it could be that.

I would suggest that if it is covered under an extended warrantee you simply have the dealer solve the problem without giving it a second thought.

Service upgrade #107: Software upgrade FID600, or FID601 should be downloaded to ensure proper overall transmission shift function performance, and or shift quality. It's not like the Volvo dealer didn't get copies of their own service bulletin...geez, who have they got working in their service department? Yes, certain problems can get worse in colder weather. A fluid will be more viscous and slower to circulate in colder weather, loose connections can get looser as the connectors contract, and then once they warm and expand they make contact again...yep, we all should have paid more attention in 8th grade science class.

Not sure if that is all of your problem though...have you been getting a check engine light at all? Just about everything in the world, or at least in the car ties into the electronic throttle control unit. It can get dirty and cause numerous driveability problems, as well as actually fail. Hope this helps.

Hi, I am having problems with my 2000 v70 GLT. IT is surging on the highway and the ETS light is going on. One mechanic says it is the software and the other said the Throttle body needs to be cleaned ($150). It stalled driving into a parking lot. What do you think?

My vadis link is acting weird, as it often does, but...

The software upgrade for the surging is for the "idle circuit". Your not idling as your tooling down the highway. There is a service bulletin on the proper procedure for cleaning the throttle body, and I have cleaned several...however...the cleaning has FAILED on all of the cars that have the problem at highway speeds, and I HATE admitting to failure...so take that for whatever it is worth, and make your dealer replace your *&%$#@*&^ throttle body.

No check engine light. I am trying to track down the upgrades you listed to see if they apply to our engine. We are at a slight disadvantage due to the distance to the dealer, 4 hour round trip. Our local dealer underwent an ownership change and service has gotten lousy so we aren't going there anymore. Anyhow, the service rep we are talking to 2 hours from here that recommended the ATF change has told us the updates were for 2001 models. That's why I put the question on here to see if someonelse knew otherwise. Your info is helpful. His recommendation has been to first change the ATF at 150.00 out of my pocket. I guess it would be wiser to spend the 50.00 the extended warranty requires per incident and leave it with them til they get it right. When we get it straight I will post the resolution. Thanks

You can't pull up everything that I pull up; I pay far too much for subscription, but...go to www.volvotechinfo.com. Choose service/tech manuals (I think, it has been a while since I went in as a non-subscriber), choose your model, then choose service bulletins, and then I think the one I am talking about is in either general or electrical...not transmission where one would expect it to be.

chrissij, appreciate your info, could you zero in a bit more?. I just went to the siteand it appears that any download(pdf) or printed matter will cost $6.00.
I guess not bad if one needs the info.
          thanks

The transmission download doesn't apply to 1999 models, but the S1 solenoid tends to go out on them, as well as the 2000's, now that I think about it. I think these cars are far to computerized for their own good...but then I drive an old 240 so color me biased. I will attempt to log on later to verify upgrade "part" numbers.
