Volvo Navigation System S80

I'm thinking to get the navigation system when I purchase the S80. Here are some questions and concerns I have. Any idea or comment are very welcome.

1. Volvo's NAV has a motorized screen. This seems to be more complicated than other vehicles. Is it a BIG "surgery" to install Volvo's navigation? If the NAV needs to be installed by the dealer, can I trust the techs? I don't want the dealer to break other parts while installing the NAV.

2. The MSRP is about $2000 if installed in the factory. I asked the sales person how much it will be to have the NAV instlled by the dealer. He said.... VERY EXPENSIVE. He wouldn't even quote me a price. Did he BS or was he telling the truth?

3. If I want to buy a new S80 with NAV (and if the NAV needs to be installed by the dealer), how much do I expect to pay for the NAV? This will be installed on an S80 with on-call-plus. I would guess the NAV would require less parts in this case.

Thanks!!

Thanks, CVolvo. We bought a Magellan GPS few weeks ago. It's nice but a bit pricy. This unit costs between $1k - 1.3 depends on where you get it from.

The reason that I wanted a Volvo GPS is because Edmunds.com shows the price to be $1995. It's about $600 more than the Magellan, and I can have a much better looking GPS sitting in my S80 (don't have an S80 yet, but will get one soon).

    =) =)

Yes, I think the cost of a dealer installed GPS would be a costly addition.

Just a thought, but have you considered alternatives to the Volvo GPS? A less costly and more universal solution might be to use a PocketPC and a separate GPS receiver/software. Many of these systems use the same mapping data and you'd be surprised at how sophisticated these alternatives are. I have used mine in several European countries as well as the USA and Canada. The screen size of the PPC is smaller (240 x 320 pixels), but it has voice prompts and the map data is stored on removable memory cards (rather than on a CD-ROM). My PPC GPS plugs into the cigarette adapter and mounts to the middle air vent and is very easy to move into other cars. I even used it in my 6 volt Amazon-S with a 12 volt portable battery source. You also have the use of a computer in your car that can hold other important data.

I hope nobody will mind my kidnapping part of this thread, but I am also considering installing a navigation system in my new '99 S70. I do have a Palm Tungsten so it would appear that I could get a Bluetooth antenna and the necessary software.

However, being now based in The Netherlands, well-known for its traffic jams, I am a bit concerned that such a system would not have TMC (hope I got the letters right - What I mean is the traffic information system which allows a navigation system to reroute in order to avoid traffic jams).

      Any thoughts?

      TIA,

      R

If you use Tom Tom Navigator3 and have a gprs capability with your phone (with bluetooth) then you can subscribe to a system which will do exactly that.

I currently have TomTom Navigator2 with a bluetooth GPS running on an iPAQ 3970 and it is brilliant! Voice prompts are clear and timely (but you may need to use a powered cradle with an amplified speaker if you play the Darkness at mega volumes) and the routes are in general very good. Add to this the capability to use CheckPOInt software (a free add-on) to give speed camera locations, petrol station locations etc and you have a very versatile and useful system.

For what its worth, the maps are the same as the ones supplied to Volvo, BMW and Mercedes so there is no difference in quality.

Rob, I did a bit search on this site. Some people mentioned that Volvo's NAV has "RIA" (or RAI?) I think it's the same as TMC.

          Volvo Captain,

I really should have been more clear. What I wondered about is whether there is a Palm-based system which has TMC...

          Best,

              Alastair,

I briefly looked at the TomTom site but didn't find the GPRS thing. Can you point me to the right page?

              TIA,

              R
