Motor Mount 850

I just replaced the right motor mount on my '94 855. I followed the directions given on Bay 13 at Volvospeed, but ran into a problem with the front frame bolt. I found it very difficult to remove that bolt because of clearances. In fact, the only way I was able to remove/replace it was with a 17mm box wrench, accessing from the engine side by removing the oil filter so there was room to move the wrench. My standard 17mm socket (3/8 drive with 3/8-1/2 adapter and 1/2 drive breaker bar, would not allow access with enough room to turn. My deep 17mm socket was too deep. I looked for an intermediate socket at my local Sears store, but they don't stock them, only special order.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who found they had the right tool or combination of tools to get at this bolt. I was able to replace the mount and torque the rear frame bolt as well as the two engine bolts, but the front one is on only as tight as I could get it with a box wrench. I'm sure I'll have to do the one on my '95 soon, so any sage advise is welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

I take it you are talking about the engine mount that is right down by the crank dampner? If so I use either a flex head gear wrench or a special forces socket made by Matco.

when I did mine, I did not remove the firewall bolt because it would not come lose. I simply lubricated the urathane mount with hair-gel and then pushed the mounting arm down on it. It slipped into place just fine and didn't damage the mount. Urathane is a tough material.

I used a short socket with a universal joint attached next, then a long extension. first, I sprayed some liquid wrench on it. The entire job took about 30 minutes with the bolt you're referring to taking about half the time of the entire job.

ditto, here. I used a 3/8" socket connected to 3/8 univ. joint, connected to 3/8-1/2 adapter connected to extension connected to breaker bar. Almost as much fun as my erector set.
