Monroe Shocks 850 1996

My local mechanic, who was recommended to me by a fellow Volvo owner, has suggested replacing the old shocks on my 850 turbo wagon (which has the "sports" suspension) with Monroe shocks. What do the experts think of this idea - I have had no experience of this make, so would appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance

The Bear

Did you complain about a rough ride leading him to recommend the
Monroes? They don't really compare to the OEM shocks and I can't
understand why they would be recommended unless you are trying to really
change the way the car handles and drives.

Monroe = bad. Bilstein = wonderful. Like the other post sez, do the mounts too, shocks often last longer than the mounts.

It is my opinion that the Monroes are garbage. It is the stuff you see tire stores pushing in my area. I always use BOGE which is the OE manufacturer for Volvo and have always been satisfied. If you in the area of 100K I would replace the upper spring seats while you have them out as well.

Agreed.... Monroe are cheap and not particularly good.... I can recommend Koni and also Bilstein as an alternative for Boge... I have used Koni in the past and they are excellent (and adjustable)... My brick will need some soon too (108000 mile) so it'll be getting Bilstein as they are bombproof (ask and rally car driver - they all use them as nothing else will last!)...
