I just bought a 1995 Volvo 850 turbo. When I was driving home an orange up arrow started to flash, thinking it was a load-leveling suspension I just kept driving, my old car had the same light and it meant the car was leveling. Now I was reading that it means that there is a problem whit the transmission, how do you detect the problem, and decode the code it gives you.

You can find the transmission codes at www.volvospeed.com. Look in the maintenance/repair section. It is called Bay 13. Has alot of other good information on maintaining your 850.

I also have a 1995 850 Turbo and it is OBD II compliant. This means that you can also use a code reader to determine what the problem is. I find it much easier to read the digital readout than to count the flashes. It can also be used on newer cars as well. I bought my reader for my other cars, but it works great on this one as well. You can also take it to some auto parts stores (i.e. Advance Auto Parts) and they will read your codes for you at no cost. The nice thing about the 1995 850 is that you have the option. Newer cars require the code reader.

If you are new to the 850 series, you may or may not know that the 850's automatic transmission does not have a fluid filter. You need to have your transmission flushed. If the tranny fluid is any color other than red (or slightly brown) then you could possibly have tranny troubles ahead. Get the transmission serviced as soon as possible. I think my local Volvo dealer flushed the transmission in my 96 for about $80. Well worth the peace of mind that it was done correctly.

Good luck

Oliver

The Sport/Winter mode switch on the console wasn't in the Winter mode was it? If there is actually a trouble code stored you can retrieve it through the A-1 socket in the DTC boxes under the hood (those two little boxes in front of the ECU case on the rightside strut tower). Did the tranmission seem to shift Ok? I'll email you the file on trouble shooting the tranny. You might as well get one of those Maintenance Manual CD's over on Ebay. They're good reference sources for all the work you might do on your 850.
