I was wondering if anyone had an experience with a thud/clunk type noise from the front end of a 1999 S80. It's more pronounced when I am at low speed over a slightly bumpy road or street, when accelerating from a stop, and sometimes when i turn corners and one side becomes alittle lighter. The struts, brakes, bushings, and some of the arms underneath are new. It also sounds as if it's directly under the floorboards in the front. Anyone have any ideas where I should start looking?

I had both of mine replaced. I think it was about $132. Took care of the problem. It drove me nuts.

Are you referring to the front strut tower bushings (see e-mail by sweedishimportsathensga of May 7) or the o-rings between the subframe and bodywork on the rear bushings (e-mail on the TSB by Leli001 May 5)? Would also appreciate knowing if work was done at the dealer or elsewhere.

i have the same sound. it's the subframe bushing. there is a TSB on this issue. here is the exact text from VADIS:

'A knocking noise that may occur when driving at low speeds on uneven road or at sharp turns, can be caused by one of the the rear sub frame bushings moving in the sub-frame. The knocking can sometimes also be felt in the floorboard under the drivers feet.
Install an O-ring between the sub-frame and the bodywork on the rear bushings on both left and right side as a service solution.'

new o-ring's are required. it's a relativily easy fix. i haven't had time to get to replace them it. although the sound has diminished in the past month.

Check the top strut mounts, when they go bad they cause this problem in various other Volvos, probably S80s too.

FWIW, I had a similar noise and detected that the bushings were loose. I put a couple globs of grease on each end and the noise stopped. Short term fix but at least found the problem and know its not a strut or ball joint. I'll follow the TSB lead and see if the dealer can help.

it is the strut tower bushings. very common on s80's. we do about 1 set a week.
