clunking noise in steering; need I worry? V70-XC70 1998

On my '98 V70 awd w/ 59,000 miles, I noticed (yesterday) a kind of clunking noise in the front suspension, but only at low speeds. When I turn the steerring wheel sharply left to right and back (Also, obviously, at low speeds on uncrowded streets), I can hear the same clunking, so I imagine it's something in the steering system. Has anyone experienced similar noises? Is this a do-it-yourself fix? Is it an immediate worry (Is the car safe for my wife to drive w/the kids in it?)?

Thanks, as always!

Had the same problem at 110K. Thought it was a bad CV joint, but turned out to be the ball joint instead. Had both sides swapped out--no more noises. Steering feels more solid too.

Is it possible that it is CV Joints? A quick test is to go to a parking lot and with the steering at or near full lock slowly reverse. If the clunking is pronounced then the issue is CV Joint related. Do the test in both directions to determine which side is the culprit. Good Luck!

You can also look for tears and opening in the CV joint booties by turning the steering fully in each direction.

    I believe its......... V70-XC70 1998

the sway bar links! If it does it also going over bumps then to me that verifies it! Not a major problem....mine have been clunking for 2 years now! Amazing how Volvos reputation was built on safety yet your asking if because of these symptoms is the car "safe" to drive!!! Volvo products are not what they used to be in many ways!Built to be safe in a collision, but "safe" in that you won't be stranded or have something break...2 different stories.
