Hello All fwd bricksters

I'm going to look at 95 855 non turbo wagon. What are some of the issues if any with this Volvo that i should be aware of? What do pay close attention to as far as engine goes? I currently own 92 745t and 90 245.The fwd volvo is a whole new world to me.If anyone has things i should look at etc.etc. please let me know.

Thx.

The last year of managable engine codes, ro reader required. Have a mechanic take a look at it, it is worth $100 - 150. If there are no service records, ask which dealer they took it to for service. The dealer will have the service record on file. Just give them the VIN or the seller's name.
If there are no records, find another car.

How does the air conditioner work? If it needs a recharge, beware of the infamous leaking evaporator problem($800-1100). Ask the seller about the ac recharge history. A normal refill intervale is about three years. If it has been refilled yearly, there may be a leak. Leaks in an 850 usually point to an evaporator. It can be a fun car as long as you keep up with the maintenance. Good luck.

I agree with Oliver. If they have not replaced the timing belt, you're looking at about a $350 job at the dealer. If it wasn't replaced and you buy the car, get it replaced ASAP. Also, check for the rear seal leaking. You'll notice oil on the ground under the engine.

I'd spend a few bucks and take the car to a good idependent volvo mechanic and have them go over it for you. This will allow you to find out the mechanical and find any damage history.

tranny will need change of fluid...

upper engine mount will be shot....

both easy DIY...but check the tranny fluid...take piece of tube that will fit down the dip stick and a syringe and draw some up...bright red would indicate just changed (i would wonder why...) dull redy/brown (has been cahnged at some point good sign) , darker brown (prob original, would prefer it had been changed..but livable with) black (leave NOW)

Be aware the tyres for the 16" alloys are expensive and should be 205/50's 55's can rub and cause bad damage (but are a lot cheaper...hence people fit them...)

      check air con

timming belty is due (and CANNOT be ignored)

front discs will probably be shot...

unless its all been done budget on $1500-$2000 to sort..unless you wantto do it all yourself (which is very ddoable apart from the aircon ..)

As with any Volvo, the maintenance history is very important. Volvo recommends changing the timing belt on the 850 at 70K, so check if the unit you are looking at has already been changed. (There will be a dealer replacement sticker on the timing belt cover) The FWD transmissions do not have a filter, so check the color of the tranny fluid. The "redder the better". If the tranny fluid is dark brown and looks like syrup, it is very possibly a tranny rebuild is just ahead.

I am sure others will add to this list, but the maintenance and tranny fluid are the two big item I look for in 850's. The FWD Volvo's are really great cars once you get out of the RWD mindset.

    Good luck.
