Digital Thermostat on Dash seems to be inaccurate S70 2000

After reading numerous helpful postings (thanks to all of you), I purchased a beautiful, white 2000 S70. I was driving it today when the temperature was in the 70s. The digital readout displayed in the mid 90's, then within 10 seconds dropped to 89, then spiked up to 102 degrees. My understanding is this thermostat reads the outside temperature. Presuming this is true, the thermostat was incorrect in light of the temperature outside.

Has anyone else had this occur? Any advice?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

I believe the sensor is behind the front bumper. If you were moving down the road, and it spiked like that, something is wrong. If you were parked or stopped, and it spiked, then likely the temp really is 102 exactly where the sensor is located. It's most accurate when moving.

I agree. If you are stuck in traffic, it will really climb. A bad sensor will usually peg at the extreme end of the temp scale.
