Need REAL advice on disconnecting A/C Firewall hoses 850

OK, this is take 2. The First time I used some Spring-Lock Couplers that didnt even budge the lines. I see a slot on the 'Coupler' but not sure just what this is for.
I've tried to yank off the Evaporator to AC line, by pulling apart, then wedging a vise lock and finally using a wrench to push in as described by the cover, but the plastic lock looks like it would sooner break than separate the hose. This seems almost impossible. Can anyone who has done it please explain SPECIFICALLY how to wedge them apart and what tools were used. No generalities please.

I almost got my Evap replaced today :( Toiled and got the entire instrument panel out, the white evap housing was coming out save for those darn A/C lines that sealed my fate and now its another week of driving in 80+ heat !!!

We bought the Ford snap on connector removers, cheaper than the Volvo ones. The sizes you need are 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch. I'm not sure what kind you have, or if they were the right size. You just put them on the connectors, and pull back, there's a spring in the coupler that breaks the seal, and nope, it is not as easy as it sounds. You have to wrap a shop rag around the lines, wiggle, swear, hold your mouth right, say a couple of mantras to the Volvo gods, and just pull, pull, and pull. When they finally pull loose, you'll notice, and you'll be glad you wrapped the rag around the line...cause the oil, dye and such that is in the system tastes pretty nasty...what? I told you, you have to hold your mouth just right.

Okay...that helps. Yes I do have the Ford spring-lock removal and its good to know the exact size. Unfortunately, not being a 200lb guy, the weight-mass thing is not on my side now. I was able to wiggle under the dash to replace the evap being nimble and lean without too much problems. I may just have to take it in shop to get them yanked out worst comes to worst. After that, rush feverently to replace the evap..wooo..hoo!!! It should be this weekend. I will be so happy!

are you having problems with your ac? mine has been shutting down, compressor will not cycle on and off, will overheat and shut down. ocasionally it will run normally but thats when the temp outside is cooler. took to volvo and they did the leak test then told me to come back for evap coil. I thought if evap coil was bad ac would not work at all. I did replace the high and low valve because they said that would have to be done and that is easy to do yourself. do you think they are yanking my chain? ive been looking for answers for a couplke weeks now and have come up with zip. I have seen my evap coil and it looks new I am wondering if they are just going to start replacing stuff just because they dont know whats wrong with it. can it be compressor. sorry for rambling, kelly

      Yes Kelly.
Looks like you are a stage away and still in troubleshooting. In my case, I just bit the bullet and planned to do it myself. I got the news from the dealer himself actually. His guy gave the news and the dealer being oh so eager to sell me another car that he recommended I just return the next spring for a trade-up. I felt sorry for him coz his PC died and the PC repair guys charged him near $900 to retrieve his hard drive. I laughed inside and told him I could've done the same thing for $300 bucks so I didnt really feel had. Anyway, the car drives solid and its just the evap. It costs $1100, but given the chronic bad evaps, may re-occur so I needed practice.
In your case, you need to look at electrical components NOT the evap as that would NEVER enable AC and you'd have to keep re-charging the system. There's safety switches to prevent excess pressure, heat, cycling etc etc. Look at those guys. Your failed compressor wouldn't give you AC so its something other than that. Having eliminated it, just keep on doing so. I know its near Summer so it may be easier to have it diagnosed then you just fix it yourself.
      Good Luck!
