HELP! Car stalled out while moving in traffic, started again but then stalling still... 850 1994

So today as I was driving home, my 1994 850 wagon just stalled out while moving at about 35 mph. No warning sputters, no problems driving in the past days or starting or anything. It had been driving for about 20 min and was warm and there was no warning. I couldn't get it started again and pushed it to the roadside, after a few attempts, checking the spark plug wires and disconnecting the air filter (that didn't make it start) it eventually started and seemed to be OK. But then 15 minutes later as I was attempting to get it to a place I could park, it did it again. This time it started after about 5 tries and I got it safely to a street parking spot. My friend gave me a ride home and now I am worried that I will be looking at a huge repair bill tomorrow!

THe engine check light has been on for a long time, because there is a problem with the EGR (which I am planning to try and fix using Bay13 instructions on cleaning EGR). So unfortunately I don't know if something new is wrong - well obviously there is but what it could be I have no idea. Recently had the O2 sensor replaced, the only other codes coming up seemed to be EGR related and didn't affect the car's running.

On the weekend I pulled out the instrument cluster to replace the bulb for the engine check light - could I have caused a short or soemthing? It has been runnign fine since Sunday when I did that.

I would really love to be able to fix this myself because I am moving Saturday AM and need the car, but I'm also pretty broke and have spend about $1000 in the past few months on this car (PNP, O2 sensor, radiator replaced, new tires...) I wish I had sold it last year but it's too late now!

Any clues or advice greatly appreciated. I am planning to go back down there tomorrow with my limited tools and check some stuff. i don't have a code reader, I hope I can get the car safely to a garage if I have to...

-Tina

Okay Tina,I know this is gonna sound like advice you dont need at the moment but sounds like you paid more than 25% of the value of the car in repairs in 1 year!!! I'd just sell it and limit your losses. There sounds like more work down the road too. I had a bimmer that cost me over half its value in repairs in 2 years just thinking like that. I was so glad to sell it, I almost felt guilty for the buyers- a bunhc of young teenagers with their dad. Ah well, it was like their fourth car and they seemed rich anyway. Besides when I called him a month later, he didnt seem to mind the car at all and was enjoying it so far....

I just may sell it, but I can't very well when it's not running, and I need to get it home somehow plus I need to use it to move tomorrow!

First you don't need a code reader with a 95 - check here for info on checking codes - http://www.volvospeed.com/CheckEngine.htm

Next check for codes. I just went through the ERG thing - only didn't have the time so paid my mechanic - and it makes a big difference in performance and it wouldn't take too much to make me think that if the throttle is dirty enough to clog EGR sensor other systems might be effected too.

Once you have codes hopefully they will point to something easy to fix! I've had some similar problems (not all with 850s) with no warning from battery going dead or a fly somehow got in and clogged a line or just bad gas!

Get the codes and post them! Good Luck!

    Maybe the camshaft position sensor?
I'd also check the fuel pump relay by making sure you can hear the fuel pump whirr for a few seconds before you turn the ignition key the final bit.
