Stumbles / Stalls No 'Check Engine Light' Where do I look. 850 1994

I was on my way to work this morning driving my '94 850 (N/A). After going about 3 miles with no indication of a problem, I came to a stop and when I started up again, I gave it some gas to get going and the car stumbled and stalled. I restarted and the same thing happened again. Repeat a couple more times. I started it and sat for a few moments. I got out of the car to check the exhaust and the best I can say is that there was a strong smell which I can't describe accurately. Note: Restarts took more cranking than normal, but not more than two or three seconds.

By feeding it gas very easily, I was able to get moving again, so I headed back home. By the time I neared home, it appeared to be working better. ????

The "Check Engine Light" did not get set. Any ideas of what to look at? AMM? FPR?

Thanks in advance.

Dan

Leaky cam seal seems to have been the cause. 850 1994

Klaus Thanks for your response.

I stay on top of the flame trap like you suggested. The car had sat virtually idle for a couple of weeks while I was out of town.

Anyway, I think I may have found the problem. The cam seal is leaking and the distributor cap was all gunked up with toasted oil, quite a mess. I was going to change the plugs, cap, rotor and wires, but instead, I cleaned up the old distributor cap and rotor and put it all back to gether. I din't want to ruin a brand new cap and rotor. I guess I either need to learn how to change the seal, or take it to my indie.

Thanks,

Dan

Check your "codes" first. Did you just tank up? Could have been crud in your tank. Also check your flame trap for blockage, should be done every oil change anyway.
