broken sun roof 850 1987

Hi--I have a 97 850 T5, which has an auto sunroof that has stopped working. The switch will put the sunroof in a slightly open tilt, but will not slide the window back. The dealer /repair shop , says the cable are screwed up and that it could cost $700. I can't afford it, and on't believe it. Any help would be appreciated
thanks
Jim

    Hi,

I ran into a similar problem on my 95. There is some sort of brace on the backend with a rubber seal alnog the to that somewho got gummed up. I pulled the shade and sunroof out using the instructions over at Bay 13 and noticed that somehow the two torx screws on the left hand side were in place but the connection to the slider was broken. I took the whole thing out since I didn't see the point in it and readjusted the glass after reassembly. Try looking around in there to see if something is binding and maybe its an easy fix. The dealers are in the business to make money ..so try saving a bit yourself by getting curious.

      Geeze ..

Sorry about that second sentence ..it should have read.. "There is some sort of brace on the backend with a rubber seal along the top that somehow got gummed up""...

Hmmm ..wish we had a preview and spell checker here .. the english language is hard enough without trying to read my typing! :)

      Cheers ..

Well first off believe it... whether you can afford it or not. People dont realize these fancy gadgets are very good when they work, but fixing them is a nightmare in itself. I've had issues with those rails in different imports and luckily I once just aligned them myself and never messed with the Sunroof till when it was time to sell the car. Unless you grease em frequently and care for them, they are bound to fail. Now I'd say 700 is a little too much. I was quoted 125 for a bimmer and labor to about 200. Sounds like yours are frozen. Just leave it alone and spend the 700 going to the tanning booth instead. I mean do you REALLY need to have sun-rays glow on your sholders and the loud wind messing your hair? Or is it the moon-roof? I admit that can be romantic when looking up a starry night, but you can just pull over and do that from the hood as they show in movies.
Either way, you keep that $700, swallow your pride and drive with it sealed. When I bought my Volvo it had no sunroof- you know what I said? Thank goodness!! Now if your sunroof is open then you have a different problem..but if its frozen shut, just live with it
    good luck
