1999 V70XC - Intermittant Hard Start: A New Twist V70-XC70 1999

Hey guys, I have a 1999 V70XC and in the past couple weeks have had a strange problem. Every now and again it just doesn't want to turn over. It rolls and rolls but just won't start. I only have 67,000 miles on it and the battery and wires are new. Local dealer in Mass. has had it three times now and have not been able to find the problem (yet). The second time they replaced the battery cable (for $220) and assured me it would fix the problem. The next morning my wife spent 10 minutes before it finally got going and then drove it right to the dealer where it remains today. Once it is running it seems a bit sluggish but will usually start right back up. Anyone have any ideas?
Best,
Adam

Do you know if the ignition is firing when it doesn't want to start? Is the fuel pump running? Does it seem to turn over faster than normal?

It may be a long shot, but if the fuel pump is running, there is spark, and it seems to crank rapidly, your car may be a victim of 'lawn mower syndrom'. Basically one or more valves are stuck open which means no compression and hence no start. Search the archives for more details.

Think back to the times that it didn't start and see if the car was driven a short distance before just previous to when problem occurred - not long enough to warm up. This is a critical factor to causing the lawn mower syndrom. Source of the odd name: Move the car to get the lawn mower out; cut the grass and put the mower away; move the car back into the garage; and the next morning the car won't start.

    Good luck.

    Dan
