rough start, shaky beginning , then runs fine. 850

94 non turbo wagon(165k) always started right up. Last week or so very slow to start and runs rough for a few seconds then runs fine. The starter has to grind a bit to get things going. Once in a while starts up fine(little cranking)always drives fine, then will start up with a lot of cranking. I have cranked it for a few seconds, all the lights on the dash come on, then crank again, it starts and runs shaky, few seconds, then runs fine. No codes(does the check engine light have to be lit for there to be a code stored?). This is my wife's car and it and the slow start makes her nervous to take the kid out.

New plug wires, rotor, etc. about 30 thousand miles ago. I checked and cleaned the plugs, wires, rotor and cap. No change. The air filter is clear too.

What might be a logical order or possibilities for such a problem. I will drive till it does not start but if there is something I could check now to avoid an eventual non-start problem, I would appreciate any ideas. Any help?

Have you cleaned throttle body lately? My 94 wagon was also running rough after 167k miles so gave it tune-up. Still was rough. Eventually gave code for EGR flow too low. After cleaning throttle body it is running great! See http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/egr.htm for info on cleaning.

And don't forget the flame trap!

Only code is in B2, 1-2-2.
Is that the temp sensors related to the air conditioning system? The little holes (near the drivers and passengers heads) plug occasionaly, or is this something else?
I did a throttle body cleaning like 2 weeks ago and everything was fine. I removed the flame trap then too and everything was fine.

Any more info that might help?

Only disaster codes will turn the dash light. CHECK your codes and then reset them to 1-1-1. It is possible for a sensor to start going bad - temp, and not closing the choke all the way or one of the plugs got fouled by a bad injector, or the fuel filter is clogged.
Checking the codes is the best way to pinpoint a problem. Then we can help fix it.

klaus, anyone

i thought i'd post here about *disaster codes* i wrote here my experience with the up arrows flashing, and CEL, but received no response (save my own adding a comment)... i managed to clear the arrows from moving the shifter a few times, and having Auto Zone clear CEL -- P0730 code...

i had the car checked out today, and the tires rotated-- the mechanic reported the car running and looking fine...

have you any experience (i've read a lot of your posts) with this issue, please ? thank you in advance...

best,

belle

Belle,
I don't know what kind of car you have, age of car, or miles on it. I don't have a code book with "P" codes in it. And I don't know what kind of problem you are having. Send me an email.
