Brake pads 850

The brakes on my '97 850 are squealing even though the pads were professionally changed this morning! Is this normal? The pads themselves are from Spectra and cost about $84 total for a front and back set. Should I take the car back to the shop?

Why not use OEM they don't squeal! Volvo rear pads come with anti squeal shims

OEM pads installed following the steps documented here (for brakes):

    http://www.volvospeed.com/maintence.htm

    should lead to quiet braking.

Volvo rotors should not be turned. Just replace them. About
$60 each. Front set of OEM pads are about $45. (Prices from
    online discounters.)

First...the squeal you hear is because of a vibration of the pad in the caliper. You hear this vibration as a squeal. Obviously, a smooth surface meeting a smooth surface minimizes vibration. Second, you never turn the rear rotors. Never. Third, turning the front rotors is also questionable. Fourth, there is a special shim that can be used on the rear pads, part number 272272, to minimize squeal. Fifth, I've learned to use Volvo pads only on the front, others can use what they wish, I have better luck with the Volvo pads. Sixth, turning rotors costs me $7.50 per rotor. Seventh, using the Volvo brake grease on the back of the pad also minimizes the occurence of brake squeal, and last but not least...

Your technician should have advised you of these facts. He knew that putting smooth pads on a grooved rotor was going to make one hell of a racket. He should have given you your options, and allowed you to make a decision. See if you can return the parts, purchase Brembo rotors, and Volvo front pads, and have him install them for you at labor cost. Or do it yourself, and take the parts back.

    Chris

    Brake pads Update 850

Okay, I called the guy who installed them. He said they would squeal until I either have the rotors turned or replaced entirely. Having them turned will cost me $100. This sucks.

This not only sucks, but it is nonsense too. I wire brush any part of the caliper that the pad rides on, and use an anti-squeal goop on the pads. Your installer is giving you the business. The job is not difficult, you could probably tackle it yourself. Volvospeed.com has pretty good instructions. Check it out.

Bad installation. Search the archives for squealing brakes, there are proper methods for installation. And special grease/goop to go on the back of the pads.

Do something about it NOW! My brakes squeak and squeal and it's really embarrassing and irritating. I have considered having them redone because the noise is so grating but I haven't as I still have 60% on both and just can't justify the expense right now.

I may be a neophyte when it comes to these types of things, but if there is a problem or an issue with anything that was just installed/repaired, DON'T WAIT and address it immediately. And don't worry about seeming to be a "complainer" It's your money, your car, your ears, and your duty as a consumer.

    Good luck.
