What is the easiest way to fix a drivers door that is cracking/creaking when opened & closed? 850 1997

The dealer says it needs to be welded. Does the door have to be taken off the car? I am worried about it not fitting properly when the door is reinstalled. Can it be fixed without welding or taking it off the car?

    I had the same problem. Fixed it by pulling off the rubber cover and cleaning off the base of the hinge before applying a good of quick set epoxy compound around the base with the door kept maximally open until the epoxy stuff has cured. No more noise for more than a year! Time 15 min. Cost <$5

    Let me add my voice to the link on volvo speed. I used this method to fix my door and that of a friend's. Simple, effective and cheap--takes about 20 minutes.

    YES WELDING IS NECCESSARY DOOR STAYS ON BEST HAVE A PANEL SHOP DO THE JOB AND NOT EXPENSIVE,THIS PROBLEM IS USUALLY CAUSED BY CONTINUALLY SWING THE DOOR BACK TOO FAR TO EXIT

      Also check bolts that hold the door strap. I called dealer without looking he wanted $160 to weld the strap, I went to local body shop, guy said I was second guy to come in with same problem in a week. He took a rachet and tightened the bolts, 30 seconds later no more noise.
