Volvo Oil Filter Washer Thing? 850 1995

I bought a Volvo filter from the dealer and changed my oil myself for the first time (otherwise brought it to valvoline every 3K). It came with an alluminum washer on the top of the filter that didn't seem to fit on the threading on the engine where the filter goes. What's it for and where does it go?

95' 850 wagon, non-turbo
130K miles

Like the other posters said "the aluminum washer is for the oil drain plug". In the future when you buy a filter DO NOT get the copper washer that some auto stores sell. Aluminum washers will crush to give a good seal at the drain plug and the copper washers are too hard and you may strip the plug threads in the pan (and you don't want to do that $$$)
