Check Engine light on, Error Code P0422 850 1997

My check engine light came on tonight and I pulled a code of P0422 and it says: "Catalyst Below Threshold". I erased the code and the check engine light is now off. If it comes on again with the same code, what do I need to do to fix the problem?

The front O2 sensor reads the burned or unburned fuel and tries to regulate what is going into cat. The rear O2 sensor checks that the exhaust is clean. Below Threshold means the exhaust is not as clean as it should be. Where the problem is has not been given to you by any other codes. Had you left the code in the system it will usually clear by itself if the O2 sensors see what they like but if not another code such as "running rich" might apear

Sounds like your tank got some gas with too much sulphur. I am glad you reset the code and tried again. If you do a lot of slow driving, I suggest a Polish tune up - redline in 2nd gear to blow the carbon out.
