Just out of interest:
How many miles on your "high mileage" 850? Add the year or other info as well to make it interesting, and convert from km if you are in a metric place :)
I'll start:
1994 with 226,275 miles

Hello,
My first Volvo, purchased new is a red 1996 850 GLT wagon, 5 speed manual, with a n/a engine: 315,000 miles.
My second 850 is a silver 1996 850 GLT wagon, also a 5 speed manual with a n/a engine: 235,000. This 850 was purchased used in 1999 as a Volvo VIP car with 50,000 miles.

My '95 854 Turbo has 256k miles. (Actually about 5k more miles, from when the odometer broke and took a while to get it fixed. But who's counting?...)
Nothing too major, just maintenance and wear items. I had the transmission out to replace the rear main oil seal, but no work on the transmission.
About ready to replace the steering rack (2nd time), control arms (2nd time), and see what else is rattling in the front end. Bilstein struts & shocks have 145k miles on them, so not sure if they are part of the problem or not. Otherwise it's all pretty much stock.
Turbo is original. Could probably use a rebuild to replace the oil seals.
I've fixed a lot of annoying little things. Had to re-do the headliner when the fabric disintegrated, and have spent way too much time chasing down issues with vacuum leaks. Radiator. oil cooler o-rings. Transmisison PNP switch. Oil seals on timing belt. Many brake pads. Drive shafts. Much time chasing vibrations at freeway speeds.
Steering rack has been the most annoying. I don't see too much discussion about it, so I sometimes think I'm the only one. Something wears and allows too much clearance between the input shaft and the rack, and I get slop side-to-side.
But when it's all working right, it's still my favorite Volvo to drive!

1995glt one owner me... 266005 miles going strong. Oil changes every 2500 miles. Just replaced time belt (again) water pump, tensioners. Ac work fine replaced all parts a while back. No engine work or transmission work. Thinking about the shocks which are original. Basic normal stuff for a great car of this age. Second car is a 2007 s60 awd. I prefer the 850 for its room and with 4 snows on in the winter its great.

I have a 1996 850 Turbo Wagon with 255K. Bought it used with 14K miles on the meter. I'm adding a quart every 1000 miles. Been using Mobil 1 every oil change since 20K miles. I'm not sure if it is leaking or burning, but it has passed the smog check so I would assume that if it were burning copious amounts of oil, it wouldn't pass. Just put a new alternator in last week, and in a new development, I don't seem to be getting any boost from the TC -- hoping its a vacuum line. Performance would be worse if the TC had frozen.
Hope it keeps running to 300K!

Oh well, haven't seem another yet. First time here, great questions and replies. To all those with the knowledge and those like me with a desire to learn thanks and keep an eye out for my "T" will ya

Too all the other post on here about 'high' mileage.
You still have a ways to go! You are all just starting to break them in.
As of January 2012 I turned 400K on a 1995 Volvo 850 GLT Sedan, Non Turbo motor.
Keep on driven!

My 97-850glt I would guess around 260,000 the od0meter broke about 4 yrs ago at 190,000..No engine work has been done and still has the original radiator auto trans. ac still works.. Just oil changes, timing belt, 1 water pump and 1 fuel pump. and a used 10 dollar cam position sensor.
Great car!

245k and trying to decide if I'll see it to 250k before retiring it. '96 NA that got hit in '09 and had it totaled out. Since it was the rear quarter, I just pulled it out, put in a light, and kept driving it. Its kept me from undertaking some projects on it, such as the evaporator. It needs new tires, windshield, and is burning a quart of oil every five hundred miles. The reason I assume it'll be gone soon is that it started burning coolant recently. I put some head gasket stop leak in, and we'll see if I can get 5k out of it, but I doubt it.
So, I wonder what the next one will have on it.

'94 850 turbo with 303K at latest reading of computer, the odometer stopped at 238K. Volvo rebuilt the top end at 92K and there has been the usual PNP switch, fuel pump relay and other assorted work. I do my own basic maintenance with the help of you folks on the brickboard. My wife left IL for TX on Sunday and was in AZ headed for CA when I spoke to her yesterday. Never a hesitation to jump in and drive across the country. We like this car, our 4th Volvo, so much I just bought another '94 850T. We already drove from IL to TX to FL to IL, and I drove it to WI and back yesterday. The new one is a wagon with only 105K so we hope it goes at least another 200K. We also have a '89 940T (195K) as my daily driver.

1995 850 turbo sedan with 205k miles, all of them in our hands since 9/1994. By far the best car I have ever driven on both sides of the Atlantic and on both sides of the Pacific in the $10k-250k price range (and this includes Porsches, Mercedes V8, BMWs, ...). It still runs great with the help of some volvoholics like Klaus. Its mileage is admirable (I think) at high speeds: 28 mpg at average speed of 80 mph, fully loaded with four people and luggage. In Chicago city traffic the mileage gets close to the upper teens, depending on several factors.
Major items that were changed in our car were A/C evaporator (half the effort and expense, after 4 years) the fuel pump (after 17 years), radiator (after 15 years), and front struts/shock absorbers (after 14 years).
In 3 years, I am hoping this car will be my son's first car!

I've had my 95 non-turbo 850 for 3 months and have replaced a radiator. Bought it at 186,000 and have put 4600 on it. Runs like a top.
Am trying to develop arguments to buy another but my wife's a smart cookie and hasn't yet been bit by the Volvo bug.

I have 184,321 on my 94 850. Of that a little more than 21,000 came with the car. I replaced the transmission at 100,000(I didn't know then that you were supposed to flush it every 30,000 miles. when it had problems, dealer's mechanic told me there was nothing i could do but wait until it broke and replace it.) Recently replaced balljoint and cv joint. I am really being challenged now but I love the car...the way it looks and the ride.

Our 96 855 GLT is at 239,000. We bought it with 180,000 and so far, only regular maintenace and a fuel pump. No oil is used between changes and we just got back from a 1400 mile trip. At this rate, I see 350,000 with no problem.

Not fair! If you had three Volvos, an Audi, and a Jeep with combined milage of 335,000 then that would be a fair comparison. I don't intend for my 850 to get a lot of miles on it, maybe 15K/year.

I was at the dealer this morning for my 100,000 mile service (all my miles) and he told me of a 94 850 with 320,000 miles on it. Made me feel good about replacing my broken engine mount and fuel filter. A buddy of mine with a turbo 740 and at that time a new 93 850 told me get used to the shape of that car, you're going to have it a long time.

Hi Tina,
My 1996 850GLT just turned 215,000 miles and the A/C just cost me a bundle at the dealer. Things like that make you want to get rid of it, but it rides so nice and handles decently that I just can't find another car out there that compares. What kind of driving do you do and in what part of the country are you located. Here in the Northeast you have to stay on top of getting the salt off your car in the winter. Hope your 1994 850 lasts another 225,000 miles and then you can run the survey again and beat the pants off everyone else.

1995 850 Turbo. As of this morning, 201,658 miles.
Recent repair history on my own:
Ball joints (second time)

Upper spring strut seats (2nd time)
Need to change turbo drain gasket (finally gave out)
Rear shocks (finally!)

My 1996 850T has 160k.
original owner
ipd chip since 50k
way too many rotor/pad replacements
original tranny, ac
mobil one since new
no oil leaks, ever, except the usual turbo return pipe
religiously performed maintanence
25 mpg since new
simply the best car I've ever owned
|
|
|
Well it looks like some other folks here are in the same ballpark as me, lots of higher miles than me out there...
and it confirms my suspicion that this car will last a lot longer if you know what to take care of! Mine probably would not have the oil leaks it does if I'd owned it from new, but I can't afford a new Volvo and people like you don't sell your perfectly maintained beauties :)
Thanks for sharing!

Our fleet -
109,000 - 129,000 - 79,000 - And we were plan on doubling these numbers.
Also 232,000 - but that's my 744

I have a 1996 855GLE0 that I have had since new. Right now it has 316K (197500 miles by my calculator), only major replacements have been a clutch, rear engine seal at 140K and cat converter. It needs AC work though, lucky that the weather has been cool here so far. Cloth seats are in great shape. I had the hood repainted because of stone chips and than had 3M stone guard tape applied.

I have almost all of the "compleat collection" of service invoices except for the airpump and I'm still waiting for that one.
But my car still uses absolutely no oil between changes and the clutch is the original one.
Cheap ride compared to the monthly cost of $2698 to LEASE a new BMW 760Li.

I always use one quart in 3,000 miles especially if I push it along on the highway at 70-75mph. And the rear engine seal is new. So I'm not worried, but was wondering if the Synthetic oil is why yours does not burn a drop or maybe it's your driving style??

210,000km or 126,000M. Early '94 Canadian model loaded with every option except woodgrain. Back then Volvo still hadn't designated the GLT model so there is no GLT badge on the back, but in fact my type of model ended up becoming the "GLT". Replaced all the toggle switches to newer type so that bulbs can be replaced. Installed aftermarket timed /intermittant wiper relay. Modified headlamps so the DRL's can be shut off and also installed aftermarket fog lamps using all OEM wiring and switches. Everything works and the car looks like new with one to many stone chips at front hood. Repairs have included all the usual 850 stuff like rear engine seal, glove box latch and PNP switch. At time of purchase we were looking for a two year old '95 but couldn't find one anywhere. So settled for a three year old '94 that had just come off a 3yr lease. Purchased from a local Volvo dealerhsip. I'll likely hang on to it when we purchase a brand new S60T5 some time in the next 18months.
