Intermittent ABS light and no start problem 850

My wifes 97 850 GLT with 105 K has a problem with the ABS light comes on and off intermittently. Does not seem to come on in any speicific situation or go off in any specific situation..braking or accelerating, or cruising. How do I test to see if the system's gone bad or just a short somewhere/

Also she has had several instances where it won't start...won't even click the starter, then after a few tries it may start or it may not. The it did it again and the 4 way flashers came on and stayed on and couldn't turn them off without disconnecting the battery. Had mechanic look at it and said battery was not putting out enough amps so he put a new battery in....went fine for a couple weeks then did it again...then half hour later it started right up.

...someone mentioned that might these all may be related to a problem with a faulty ignition switch??????

Any help would be appreciated as she does not trust the car but loves to drive it.

Intermittent ABS light and no start problem 850

The starting problem sounds like the electrical portion of the ignition switch.
The ABS problem, in 97, is not related to the ignition switch.

All the ABS control units (Installed on 96 and newer 850 and 70 series) will eventually fail after they reach 65,000 miles or 5 years. The average is 85,000 miles and/or 6 years for failures.
The erratic ABS light and/or no trouble codes is an indication of a defective ABS unit.
A dealer will charge about $120.00 to diagnose the problem and tell you that you need a new ABS control unit.
Having said that. Here is an alternative to correcting the problem for good.

Could be the ignition switch. My 850r would hesitate(as if starter was dead) when starting and the starter motor would catch once the engine had started.

ignition switch is cheapish at £40-£50 in the uk.

I changed mine and it sorted the problem.
