Replacing A/C Compressor on '94 850 850 1994

I took my '94 850 turbo into the dealer because the a/c would quit after the engine gets hot. They have convinced me that the compressor (actually the clutch) is bad. When it's hot, the metal expands and the clutch tries to engage, but can't. Tapping the clutch with the backend of a screwdriver causes it to engage.

The dealer wants $1,050 to replace the compressor. I'm fairly decent with repairs, but don't have an enormous amount of time. Has anyone here changed a compressor before on this series? How involved is it? I know about refrigerant reclaiming issues and I have a good set of R-134 gauges (manifold). I just don't want to have to jack up the engine, remove half of the front end, etc., to take it out. Thanks in advance.

- Mark

    Replacing A/C Compressor on '94 850 850 1994

    Mark,
I replaced the compressor on my 96 850 last year after trying several electrical circuits designed to reduce the power to the clutch after pull-in, but with limmited success. The clutch had worn and would not pull in when hot. I got the compressor on Ebay and it had a smaller clutch gap than mine did. So far it is working but I had to bypass the overheat switch, it failled open. There is a write-up on how to remove the clutch without discharging the system but I have not tried it yet. I think it posted on VolvoSpeed. It's tough to get at the compressor mounting bolts but it can be done with 1/4" drive sockets using universals and extentions. You remove the radiator mounting bolts and move it forward to get room to drop the compressor down.

Sorry that I have no clue to your problem but the clutch could be the cause of the failure of my T5R A/C when the engine is running hot. I have even replaced the evaporator and couldn't prevent the A/C from cutting out. Thanks

MY 96 CUTS OUT AND VOLVO WANTED TO REPLACE THE EVAP AND COMPRESSOR, AFTER READING NUMEROUS POSTS I AM CONVINCED ITS THE COMPRESSOR AND CLUTCH THAT NEED TO BE REPLACED, I HAVE SEEN WHERE THE COMPRESSOR IS AND ITS UNDER THE ALTINATOR, NOT A EASY SPOT. I WOULD OF GLADLY PAID THAT TICKET TOO, VOLVO GAVE ME A PRICE OF OVER 2K, KELLY
