Extra Bulb in Headlamp Assy??? S80 1999

Hello All,

I just got my S80 back from the body shop after getting tagged by a Grand Cherokee in the front-left quarterpanel area.

On the new headlamp assy, there is a small bulb that is not able to be used with my model year of S80. It's in the upper LH corner of the assy. It's maybe 1/2-3/4" in diamter. This bulb was not in the older assy. It's only on the driver-side assy.

Does any S80 owner know what this bulb is for? I'm just curious.

Thanks!
Tim

I suspect that they replaced your headlight assembley with that of a 2001. My 2001 has such a light. It flash when I set the alarm and Lights when I approach the car and use the yellow button on the remote. I suspect that Postion means it is simply postiong the car or at least that section.

Does anyone disagree with this train of thought?

on younger S80's they moved the position light from the corner amber light to the inner headlamp assembly. this made it look like the highbeam is on but a little dim. on '99s the position light was in the same place as the turn signal lights.

i noticed this on my '99 S80 too.

Ok, so what is the position light, i.e. what is it's function?

If possible, I wouldn't mind replacing it with a small blinking LED (in addition to the one on the dash) or something to ward off thieves.

      Thanks for responding Leli001

well the position light is used to illuminate the front of the car so it is easier to notice which end of the car it is when it's getting dark before headlights are required. it's the same as the rear position lights which are red, the front are just amber or white.

the DRL's on the S80's are always on so it defeats this purpose but it's a standard on all cars. on later S80's they moved them from the corners to the center where the hi-beams are. so the bulb is not even connected to any wiring in your car or mine because they are '99's. they must have just found it cheaper to manuf. the later model headlamp assembly and make it compatible to the older models.

but if you wanted to, you can wire a LED directly into the socket of the headlamp.

        hope this clears things up.
