Software Upgrades S80 2001

Is there any way to get software upgrades without going to a dealer? I was told they cost about $1200-$1300. I spoke to a certified Volvo repair shop that does warranty work and this is what they told me.

i work in a volvo parts room and just about every software we bill out is between $15-$30 with the excaption to total reloads their a bit more. and if not mistaken the tech time is one or two tenths. so $1200-1300 is extremely high

Any independent that has Vadis should be able to do downloads, many of which are covered under warranty. Even if your car is just barely out of warranty, and you have to pay for the upgrades out of pocket, I can't see them costing anywhere near what you were told.

true... most software costs very little even if out of warrenty and a customer is paying for it. you can even buy a total upgrade which upgrades every module on the can network in one big download, ask your dealer for a price.

If it's not broken, why fix it?
I have a 2001 S80 with everything working just the same as it did when delivered in 2001. I have never had a software upgrade of any kind, nor do I want one (and whatever new problems might come along with it).

Hi
Why? because if you had a 99 or 2000 year S80 the software was so early it couldn't recognise the faults that happened on those early cars .esp the autobox.
My solenoids failed but no codes showed up on VADIS . The gearbox system was updated and then but only then did all the error codes show up confirming
failed solenoids. The box also then went into the "limp home mode" reported else where as car won't go.Once new solenoids fitted box then needed and took another update .
You just don't know what might be lurking round the corner.
The S80 broke new ground technically and the customers did the beta testing
