Time to replace Starter?? 850

Last year I had a 'no start' problem and I solved it by replacing the Electric Switch in the steering column. This year it's a little bit different. This time I can hear the starter go 'click' but it won't crank over. I can't think of anything else but replacing the starter. Any ideas guys?? How bad a job is the starter and can anyone point me to s site with instructions on replacing it.

I had my starter rebuilt by a local auto electric shop. They rebuild them for mechanics and parts dealers in the area. It was $215 a couple of years ago removeded and re-installed.

Don't do the starter. Remove it and take the solenoid apart, and reverse the big copper contactor. The file the main contacts smooth. All will be well.

I had this problem once on an old Ford, turned out to be the starter solenoid. Exact same symptoms. Check out OZBricks or Bay13 for info on replacing the starter.

I replaced mine in the spring, it was full of salt, got one from volvo had my friend with a lift put it on, he said it was the biggest pain in the butt to get to, and he wanted me to get rid of my car. this was how fustrated he was, the starter was about 200 from volvo. kelly

Looks like I'm going to be doing mine too. I mean it's time after 200k and I guess I've been lucky until now. I did the electric ignition switch last year which bought me some time. It just kills me to spend another$200 + installation. I'm definitely not doing it myself with my limited number of tools and no lift.
What year is your car Kelly?? I don't care what your friend says. Keep the car. They're beautiful machines when they run right. Good luck!!!!

Being a Volvo lover, I would be sad too if you had gotten the Blazer. Let me see, a Volvo or a Blazer.hmmmmmm I'll take the salty Volvo!!!!!
I'm here in CT. and we got our share of salt too but I try to wash the car after going through a nasty storm to try to preserve it as long as possible. It's been really expensive though. These last few months I've done the timing belt and tune-up. The evaporator ($1100 at the dealer) and now my starter. Not to mention the cabin temp. sensors are going and I will need to replace those soon. Yikes. But I just love the way the car feels and drives. It is a perfect car. It's comfortable and yet it handles well.
I just wish we had a place to go and meet with other Volvo lovers up here in CT. I miss the gathering we used to have at Volvo headquarters in N.J.

Yes. Not exactly the best job in the world but it pays well. If I had my choice, I would be working in a more meaningful job that would help others. But for now, Travelers pays the bills. What about you? What do you do for a living?

No need to use a lift. All you have to do is to remove the fan shroud (4 bolts), then the battery and battery tray.
