Electronic Climate Control Mystery! 850

I have a 93 850 glt sedan with electronic climate control. The Climate control unit in the center console does not work; I can't even make the fan operate. It will illuminate when I turn on the lights but that's about it. I recharged the A/C and replaced the climate control relay behind the glove box but still no luck. The previous owner's mechanic told me that that would fix it and that there was some type of grounding problem. The fan is new so that's not the problem either. The dealership wants at a minimum estimate, $2-300 bucks just to trace the problem but who knows if they can even do that. Has this happened to anyone else before and/or does anyone have any suggestions? I'm starting to pull my hair out with no A/C in the summer in Hawaii! Thanks everyone!

As someone else before said, check the climate control codes in B1. Since the lights light up on the control head, I doubt that is the problem. I would suspect the power stage to be your nemesis.

Codes? 850

The FIRST place to begin is by checking for any ECC fault codes stored in B1.
Don't just guess at a control unit because they rarely go bad, it's usually a bad sensor.

sometimes the ECC unit itself is bad. Try to get a replacement at the wreck yard or on e-Bay, I've seen them on sale for $25. Nice to have a cheap spare on site to help you diagnose problems.

Electronic Climate Control Mystery! 850

Sorry I don't have specific information to help you with the 850 - my 96 hasn't given me any trouble, but I hate to see nobody responding to your problem. You might look at the 700/900 reference material on this site just for general educational benefits - I successfuly repaired my 940's climate control following instructions I found there. You might also look at volvospeed.com for 850 specific information. Another option would be to see if you could pick up a replacement cheap on ebay - I have seen 850 controls there before but don't remember the price. If you could get one cheap enough, you could just consider it a less expensive way to troubleshoot vs what the dealer would charge you in labor alone! Have you used the search function on this forum to look for other posts on this subject?

Best of luck!

Regards,
