Very strange Oil Leak 850 1993

I've got a 93 850 GLT with about 171,000 miles on it. I went out to the car this morning and started it up and the low oil light was on--when I moved the car I discovered a lot of oil under the front. No idea how much but the dipstick registered no oil at all. I poured in about 2 quarts and it looks like it is leaking from the Oil Filter. I had the rear main seal replaced less that 25,000 miles ago. I had to get to work so I haven't had time to really look around under there. Any suggestions as to what I should look for. The oil apparently leaked out overnight.

Thanks

Bill

Turns out there were 2 puncture marks in the oil filter itself. I had taken it to one of those quick lube places about 3 months ago for an oil change and evidently they didn't have the right size oil filter so they put one on that was about 3 inches longer than the correct one--so it hung down pretty low out of the bottom of the car. I must have had a rock or something fly up and hit it when I was driving home.

Thanks

Bill

Wow, thats fortunate, it's only a few dollar fix then, and a few minutes of your time.

Glad to hear it wasn't something serious. I wouldn't be taking the car back to that place again though if I were you, and I'd go back there and let the service manager know what happened.

I'd start with changing the filter .
When you take the old filter off
make sure there aren't 2 gaskets on it.

I would also look for a crack in the oil pan. Hit any big rocks or something similar lately? The oil pan on the 850 is cast aluminum, and is pretty brittle when compared to the stamped steel pans of yesteryear. Those things could take a brutal beating and still remain intact. Maybe pan gasket to, although I've never heard of one of of those go on this site. As was said previously, first (and cheapest and easiest) place to look would be the filter. Either a bad gasket, two gaskets, or the damn thing just worked itself loose.
