Loud Whine From Steering Pump 850 1995

I have 1995 850 with 160K miles. Recently, the power steering pump has started to make a loud whining noise. The whine increases with the engine revs. No effect on the whine when I fully turn the steering wheel to either side. Checked steering fluid level - it was ok.

Could someone advise what would make the noise go away? Do I need to replace the pump - what would it cost in terms of parts and labor?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies thus far.

Yes, I did the check the fluid level - its fine. I had a mechanic check it out and he confirms that it is PS pump that needs to be replaced - quoted $650-750 for the job.

I understand I can buy new or remanufactured pumps for about $100-150 off the web. How difficult would it be to install one by myself? Does anyone have instructions for replacing the pump? I've checked volvospeed.com (Bay 13) they don't have instructions for replacing PS pumps - is it a very big/complex exercise?

You have described a typical symptom of a failing power steering pump. Of course non of us here on the 'net can say for sure :).

Remanufactured PS pumps are listed on www.discountautoparts.com for $69.95, assuming that you transfer the reservoir from your existing pump.

IIRC, these are standard General Motors pumps.

Are you sure the sound is coming from the power steering pump? My '95 850 with 100k miles recently had a whining sound that increased with RPM whose source was the A/C compressor (clutch bearing). Replacing the compressor and the engine is quiet now.

I had the same problem and had to have the pump replaced. Bought a used one--prices varied, from $45 on ebay to $150 from a yard that guaranteed the part for a year.

Could you simply be low on power steering fluid? Check your manual on how to add fluid. You can buy power steering fluid "ATF" at your local quickie mart.

It's a place to start. Should be $3 in parts and 5 minutes of your labor.
