wicked front end vibration V70-XC70 1998

for the 2nd time in 2 mos. i have had the front end vibrating violently..it hapeens just out of the blue at over 60 mph.when i drop below 60 it sorta goes away. i pulled over and checked and only right rotor was hot! it went away after a while but what the heck is it? brakes ?bearing?i'm guessing it may be abs because of the pulsating..any ideas on what to check???

If it happened after you applied the brakes, it is a sticking brake caliper. If that is the case, you will need to replace the caliper with a rebuilt one.

I had a similar experience and it turned out to be a broken engine mount on my car. It took a while for the problem to be diagnosed correctly. I had wicked vibrations.

Hi,

Vibrations and problem accelerating started slow and got worse over time. I took it to the dealer who could not diagnose it the first time although I could feel that it wasn't pulling properly when the clutch was dropped. Then the bad vibrations and when idling it would start to make a banging noise.

Eventually the dealer started changing parts and found the bad mount.

Bay 13 has a good discussion on what to look for on the front engine mount and how to replace it.

thanx guys but an engine mount would not make a brake rotor temperature rise would it? i'm pretty sure it was a stuck caliper or abs failure of some kind and when left to cool it retracts to normal position(therefore intermittent.) the front end does shudder like crazy when this happens and at speeds in excess of 70 mph it can be downright dangerous. i think it happens after i applied the brakes...time will tell....

I agree, sounds like a sticking caliper. Do you hear any grinding type noise? Especially after a heavy rain? How many miles?

BTW - How do you like your "98"? Considering purchasing one or perhaps a 97 850.

no grinding noise but i have heard an intermittent high pitched hum like a belt or more like a bearing on compressor.i really enjoy my t5 5spd.no problems associated with auto trans. and avg.25+- mpg. it currently has 115k on it ..i enjoy occasionally standing on it and the reaction it evokes on the unsuspecting

With 115K on it, it wouldn't surprise me if it is a caliper.

My 240 rear caliper makes a whirring sound sometimes, usually after a heavy rain. Going to replace it in Sept. I think one piston is stuck inside the caliper and makes occasional noise. Take a good look at your rotor. My rotor has a band of rust on the outside where that caliper piston isn't contacting the rotor. Brakes pull a little when hit hard and vibrate some too...I think a seized front caliper could be causing your front end vibration.

Are you located in the Cuttyhunk area? Great place! I'm in Falmouth.
