replace EXHAUST MANIFOLD GASKET a DIY? 850 1997

Does anyone replaced the gasket for exhaust manifold by themselves? Is this a DIY job?
I've heard that one has to use torch/acytelene to loosen the bolts from the manifold from the cylinder head block but how do you access the manifold, from the top or the bottom? If bottom, do you need to lift the car high?

Thanks.

replace EXHAUST MANIFOLD GASKET a DIY? 850 1997

This is a DIY job, pretty easy, but will take some time. I have never tried to remove the exhaust manifold with the catalytic converter still attached. It is possible that the flex joint has enough give to make this possible. Perhaps someone else has done it with the cat attached and can advise. I am going to assume that it will be necessary to disconnect the cat, and then remove the exhaust manifold. So you will have to put the car up on ramps to disconnect the cat. The exhaust manifold studs can be accessed from the top of the car. Exhaust bolts do tend to rust, but on my '93, I had no problem getting the nuts loose. Some penetrating oil (Liquid Wrench or equivalent) put on the day before will make things easier. Each port has it's own gasket, so make sure that you order a set of 5, and not just a single gasket. On your '97, you may need to remove the air pump inlet also.

      phantom,

I'll follow the steps you suggested when I'll start to tackle this job and sure do look simple but will consider an amount of work. Thanks for your help.
