2000 s80 'Emission System Service Required' S80

I have had the "Emission Systems Service Required" light on for the past 3 days, but have not seen any dip in performance or fuel consumption. What is this an indication of, and will this require a trip to Volvo to repair/reset the warning light? Thanks

Put the car in drive apply the break, and let it idle for 2 or 3 minutes (similar to sitting at a red light)in gear. The car should reset itself in a day or so, if not immediately. That's what my dealer told me to do and it worked. Supposedly it's some kind of ridiculous internal emissions test that the car notoriously fails itself on. Hey, give it a shot, it's free.

    Hi
Get it to a dealer to read the fault codes in the "computer"
Problem could be anything from spurious errors which a clear out of codes will likely give months of trouble free to ,for example, Mass Air flow meter and other expensive bits .You won't know until the codes are analysed
    Good luck
Ps just finally had a new MAF after several years of ESSR message appearing and being cleared .
