where is the evap valve is located,? 850

hi everybody,
one of my friend own a 1997 volvo 854 non turbo .. Recently check engine light came on and he took it to dealer.. they said that evap valve needs to be changed and quoted him 240.00$. When he told me about it as a 88 volvo 740 non turbo owner i decided to post this message and seek some help before he plunges the money to dealer.. I am a good DIY person.. changed my 740 timing belt, rebult the whole front end with shocks and new bushings ect... and i am willing to help him on this problem. But i know jack about 854 model and evsp valve ect..
So My question is Wher eis the evap valve located under the hood , what is its function, how much does it cost to buy it (for example from FCP Groton) abd is it fairly easy to do the job? as soon as i go to my home i will post the error message they got from the ecu too..
Thank you for help and time

The EVAP purge valve is located on the fan shroud on the left side (sitting at the driver seat). Two vacuum hoses and an electrical connector lead to it.
I have been very successful in cleaning it with carburator cleaner and very low pressure compressed air.
This will work if the valve is leaking or stuck. If the electrical solenoid is no longer alive, then a replacement will do.

there are soem good answers to this posted here on the brick board, the search feature shoudl turn them up. I asked the same questions just a month ago. I got an evap valve from my local salvage yard for 35., replacing it is one fo the easiest jobs done on 850. a replacement from fcp gropton is around 60-80 i think. typical dealer to replace parts, it very well might be the 5 cent hose that is dry , cracked and slowly leaking.
